The difference between a foam mattress and a spring mattress is scientifically documented and it can be demonstrated by means of an electronic measurement system. The two illustrations show what happens when a person weighing 50kg lies on a foam mattress. The measurements show that a foam mattress shows a significant reduction in pressure.
The light blue and the blue show areas of low pressure. Yellow, orange and red show areas where the body is subjected to a high and uncomfortable pressure which may lead to reduced blood circulation. You will recognise this as troubled sleep in which you toss and turn throughout the night.

Memory foam was developed in 1966 under a contract by NASA's Ames Research Center to improve the safety of aircraft cushions. The temperature-sensitive memory foam was initially referred to as "slow spring back foam"; most called it "temper foam". Created by feeding gas into a polymer matrix, the foam has an open-cell solid structure that matches pressure against it, always returning to its original shape and form.
